Mayor Extends Thanks for Successful Senior Red Sox Day

A big thank-you to all of the dedicated volunteers who pitched in to make the Mayor’s Senior Red Sox Day, held recently at the Sons of Italy Hall, a huge success!  More than 350 Woburn seniors attended and enjoyed a barbecue, entertainment and raffle prizes.

Special thanks to Joanne Collins, Director of the Woburn Council on Aging, Len Burnham, interim Assistant Superintendent for the Department of Public Works, and Marie Lingblom for pulling together all of the event details.

Extra special thanks are in order for members of the Woburn Host Lions and Woburn Kiwanis Club for manning the sizzling grills to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for hundreds of seniors—and also to the Woburn Breakfast Lions and Middlesex Lions for serving meals again in record time!

Thanks to Tracey Murphy, Transportation Coordinator for the Council on Aging, and van drivers Jack Foley, Paul Hogan and Ed Grant for coordinating the pickup and delivery of event supplies and many seniors.  Thanks also to Patti Meehan, COA Outreach Coordinator, and the many volunteers from the Woburn Senior Center who are always willing to lend a hand.

Big thank-you to Metropolitan Home Health Services for donating two Red Sox tickets that raised $1,044.00 through the sale of raffle tickets by Dorothy Capone.  The funds raised will provide for programs at the Woburn Senior Center. Many thanks to Dick Flavin, legendary Boston sports announcer and poet laureate of the Boston Red Sox, for stopping by to thrill the crowd.

Pitching in again this year with donations of door prizes and manpower to serve seniors were City Councilors Richard Haggerty, Lindsay Higgins, Mike Concannon, School Committee member Chris Kiesel, Veterans Director Larry Guiseppe, and the Friends Helping Seniors organization.  Thanks also to Katie Concannon and Brenda Connors for taking on the Hula hoop challenge, and entertaining the crowd with some great Hula hooping skills!

Also pitching in again this year to serve seniors and help wherever they are needed were Doug Murphy, Eileen Galvin, Mackenzie Galvin, Jen Duran, Michelle Burnham, Nick Burnham, Jean O’Connor, Jeanne Lingblom, Mary O’Connor, Claire Mantica, Joan DiSarcina, Handicap Commission Chair Veronica Andrews and her son Bobby Andrews.

Many thanks to Joseph’s Catering of Woburn for delivering high quality food, and also for donating all of the ice and coffee for the event.

D.J. Dan Maguire was terrific, as usual, and kept the crowd entertained with fun sing-a-longs and trivia. Thanks also to Woburn Public Media for being there to capture a fun afternoon.

Thanks also to the DPW and its summer employees, Woburn Fire Department and Woburn Police Department for providing logistics and safety support during this year’s event.  And, thanks to Bob Hubbard, Steve Cugno, Dave Bluen, and Jack Danizio and the Sons of Italy for being such gracious hosts.  See you next year!
