The Sand Pit

All of Horn Pond was once privately owned land. Land owners exploited the area's resources for commercial interests. One of these activities was soil mining. The land arond Horn Pond contains deposits of sand and granite rock. At the end of the 19th and early 20th century, sand and gravel mining operations were active in several sites. The natural outcrop of rock along the southern end of Arlington Road was once a small quarry operation with a narrow gauge rail system used to haul blasted rock. This rock was used for rail road beds in the area. The sand pit behind the Pond has been mostly reclaimed and planed with white pines.
