With the weather as warm as it has been it’s hard to think about winter. But, as we all know all too well, the cold dark days of winter will be upon us sooner than we might like to think.
The words alone make me cringe. With energy prices higher by far than any of us has ever experienced we can’t avoid thinking how costly it will be to keep our families comfortable during the months ahead. We in the fire service share the same uncertainties and also are deeply concerned with measures some of us may take to lessen the financial impact of skyrocketing energy prices, possibly compromising safety in our homes and at work.
Generally speaking, all portable devices should only be used following manufacturers recommendations. Permanent installations need to be installed by a licensed professional and must be inspected by the appropriate agency. We’ve found some websites that offer a variety of tips and information on such subjects as; insulating and heat conservation methods, portable heater safety, carbon monoxide and CO detectors, winter heating safety, area heaters using various fuels, and other related information. Some are quite basic but we have found some to be quite interesting and informative. Please take a few minutes to see if any may be of some use to you.
